XO Furniture / Design exploration
A place to pause for a moment.
A compact bench with a place for a plant, a separate ambient lamp and replaceable parts. The first step is one practical, comfortable prototype.

Build the shape at full scale
- The result
- A simple full-size model in cardboard or unfinished wood, with feedback on sitting, standing up and reaching the plant and tray.
- Ready to use
- Concept image, functional requirements and the public making workbook.
- Next
- A furniture maker then develops the supporting structure, joints and material trials.
A maker brief helps start the conversation. Downloading does not reserve a commission. Agree on scope, compensation, timing and use of the result before making begins.
- A wood/bamboo combination with separate printed accessories is the first proposed approach.
- Dimensions, materials and construction will be agreed with the maker.
XO Furniture / MB-01 / 22 Sep 2026 / working brief
Land. Grow. Glow.
Develop a compact indoor seat for two, with a removable plant place, loose tray and an existing removable ambient lamp. Soft, organic shapes; comfortable, repairable and recognisably XO. The image is a visual direction, not an approved technical design.
First settle the dimensions
Dimensions have not been selected. This is the decision record for the maker brief. Measure a full-size mock-up with the intended users before approving a drawing or requesting a fixed production price. Makers may propose alternatives, explicitly labelled as proposals.
| Dimension / interface | Current status | How we settle it |
|---|---|---|
| Overall width × depth × height | OPEN · mm | Room, access route and full-size mock-up |
| Clear sitting width for two | OPEN · mm | Sit together with cushions and accessories in position |
| Loaded seat height + usable depth | OPEN · mm | Comfort, feet support, getting up and cushion compression |
| Back support height / angle | OPEN · mm / degrees | Comfort trial with an adjustable mock-up |
| Cushion thickness and fastening | OPEN · mm | Upholsterer's proposal, removal and cleaning |
| Plant module + inner pot | OPEN · mm / filled mass | Choose actual pot; check removal, spill containment and stability |
| Tray reach + lamp footprint | OPEN · mm | Reach from both seats; separate water from lamp |
| Sections, joints and tolerances | OPEN · mm | Maker's structural design and test plan |
| Intended loads / test conditions | OPEN · kg / method | Maker defines intended use and appropriate verification |
Construction routes
- First proposal: wood/bamboo load-bearing base, loose cushions and replaceable printed decorative panels or accessories.
- Alternative: timber/bamboo for both the structure and decorative parts.
- Research alternative: industrial 3D printing, starting with one non-load-bearing accessory. A fully printed seat needs its own engineering and testing.
- Keep the plant module removable. A separate plant-place concept and the family XO-DY kit need their own dimensions and parts lists.

Deliverables before the quotation round
- A measured full-size mock-up, comfort observations and an agreed dimension table.
- A versioned drawing, structural proposal, joints, finish and removable accessory interfaces.
- A parts list and test plan for stability, strength, repeated use, water containment and maintenance.
- A quote request tied to that revision: separate design, materials, labour, printing, upholstery, assembly, testing and transport. Follow-on quantities and budget remain open.
